Managing processes and dynamics - the secret of great interviewing and handling difficult situations
The invisible skill of a moderator is in managing all the processes and dynamics that go on in groups and interviews. If you don't know what's going on underneath, you don't know how to handle it when it all goes pear-shaped. Clients viewing groups are particularly sensitive to what appears to be poor management of 'difficult' respondents.
- Some models for managing group dynamics
- What to do at different stages of groups/interviews from introduction to closing
- The importance of the introduction
- A process model for depths too
- Different types of 'difficult people' and why they are that way
- How to handle them before and during the behaviour - a simple method you can apply to almost anyone
- Managing yourself as moderator when things go wrong
- Teaching clients how to really understand and watch groups
You'll have a model (or two) that explain what happens in groups and show how moderators need to do different things at different times. You'll be surprised by the power of your introduction and you'll have a few simple techniques for managing all sorts of difficult people in one go. That includes both repondents and clients in the back room!
- Pre-course exercise - Reflect on some 'difficult' behaviours and what might underly them
- Course notes
- Post- seminar coaching - practice the double whammy technique on your colleagues until you are comfortable with it
This seminar is delivered using screen sharing and audio so is fully interactive.
